Assam is home to nearly 80% of the world’s greater one-horned rhinoceroses, with the global population reaching an estimated 4,075, according to recent figures highlighted on World Rhino Day 2026. India accounts for around 3,323 rhinos, with Assam holding the majority. Kaziranga National Park alone shelters more than 2,600 of these animals.
The achievement reflects years of conservation efforts, stronger anti-poaching measures and habitat protection. Assam also recorded zero known rhino poaching cases in 2025, marking only the second time since the 1970s that the state has achieved this milestone.
