India has clarified that its support for a UN General Assembly resolution promoting equal-area world maps does not amount to acceptance of any particular map or depiction of its territorial boundaries. The resolution, titled “Correct the Map”, was adopted on 4 September 2026 and focuses on improving the accuracy of how the relative sizes of continents and landmasses are represented on maps. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India voted in favour of the resolution because it supports the broader principle of using equal-area map projections, which preserve the relative size of landmasses. However, India made it clear that the resolution does not authenticate or endorse any specific world map and does not address political boundaries or disputed territories. India also objected to what it described as inaccurate or misleading depictions of its territory in a newly released UN map, particularly concerning Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The MEA stated that India’s sovereign territory must be depicted in accordance with its official map and that its position on territorial integrity remains unchanged.
