Botswana-Born Cheetah ‘Radha’ Released In Madhya Pradesh
September 21, 2026 • National
A three-year-old female cheetah brought from Botswana has been named Radha and released into Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh as part of India’s Project Cheetah. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav released the cheetah, previously identified as CCB-2, into a protected enclosure on September 20, 2026, after she was transferred from Kuno National Park.
Radha’s arrival marks another step in expanding India’s cheetah conservation programme beyond Kuno. With her relocation, Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary now houses four African cheetahs — two males, Prabhas and Pawak, and two females, Dheera and Radha.
The move is intended to establish a second suitable habitat for cheetahs in India and support the development of a healthy, genetically diverse population. Bringing cheetahs from different African countries into the programme may also help broaden the genetic pool for future generations.
Project Cheetah began in 2022 with the aim of reintroducing cheetahs to India after the species became extinct in the country. The expansion to Gandhi Sagar is part of the long-term plan to establish cheetah populations across multiple habitats and strengthen wildlife conservation efforts.
