Google Unveils WeatherNext 3 To Revolutionise Weather Forecasting
September 3, 2026 • Science & Tech
Google has launched WeatherNext 3, its latest AI-powered global weather forecasting model, designed to deliver more accurate, faster and highly localized weather predictions. Developed by Google DeepMind and Google Research, the model can generate forecasts every hour and uses real-time satellite observations to better capture rapidly changing weather conditions.
A major upgrade is its higher spatial resolution. WeatherNext 3 provides forecasts at resolutions as fine as 5 kilometres for key surface variables, making the global weather picture around five times sharper than the previous WeatherNext 2 model. It also improves predictions for rainfall, temperature and other rapidly changing weather conditions.
The model is designed to provide a more timely picture of weather by incorporating real-time satellite data, rather than relying only on older weather-model datasets. This is particularly useful for monitoring storms, heavy rainfall and other fast-changing weather events.
