India Develops Indigenous Laser Link For Satellites
September 8, 2026 • Science & Tech
Bengaluru-based space-tech startup Astrogate Labs is developing India’s first indigenous Optical Inter-Satellite Link (OISL) terminal — a technology that could allow satellites to communicate directly with one another using laser beams.
Think of it this way: instead of a satellite always having to send data down to Earth before it can reach another satellite, OISL can let satellites pass information directly through space. This can help create faster, high-bandwidth and low-latency communication networks for future satellite constellations.
Astrogate unveiled its OISL capability at Bengaluru Space Expo 2026 and is targeting flight readiness in 2027. The company has also developed AstroLink Micro, a 10 Gbps space-to-ground laser communication terminal.
