India Launches Semicon 2.0 To Boost Domestic Chip Manufacturing
September 1, 2026 • Science & Tech
India’s Semicon 2.0 initiative marks the next phase of the country’s semiconductor strategy, aimed at expanding domestic chip manufacturing and building a stronger end-to-end semiconductor ecosystem. The programme focuses on strengthening capabilities across chip design, manufacturing, packaging, materials and related technologies, while reducing dependence on global supply chains.
With a reported ₹1.27 lakh crore budgetary outlay, the initiative is designed to attract investment, support semiconductor projects and develop the infrastructure and capabilities needed for large-scale chip production in India. The government expects the programme to help India build greater capacity to meet domestic demand and strengthen its position in the global semiconductor industry.
