The North Eastern Railway (NER) has operated ‘Awadh Mahashakti’, its longest-ever freight train, from Gonda to Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh. The nearly 2-km-long train had 129 wagons hauled by three locomotives and covered around 160 km in 3 hours 50 minutes. The train was created by combining three freight rakes into a single movement. This meant that three separate rakes could travel together, helping the Railways save train paths, reduce congestion and use its existing network more efficiently. The route is part of High-Density Network-4 (HDN-4), an important railway corridor connecting Delhi with Guwahati. The operation is therefore significant not just because of the train’s size, but because it demonstrates how Indian Railways can move more freight using fewer train movements.
