Stanzin Tsangyang Becomes Kargil’s First Woman Army Officer
September 10, 2026 • National
In a historic milestone for Ladakh, Stanzin Tsangyang has become the first woman from Kargil district to be commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army. Hailing from the remote Zanskar Valley, she received the rank of Lieutenant after successfully completing her training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, during the Passing Out Parade held on 5 September 2026.
Her commissioning is significant because she is the first woman Army officer from Kargil, inspiring young women from one of India’s most geographically challenging regions to pursue careers in the armed forces. Her parents, who travelled from Ladakh to Chennai, witnessed the ceremony as she proudly marched in uniform and joined the Indian Army as an officer.
