Assam has taken a major step towards expanding its power generation capacity, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laying the foundation stone for Adani Power’s ₹48,000-crore thermal power plant at Chapar in Dhubri district on September 20, 2026. The 3,200-megawatt plant will consist of four units, each generating 800 MW, and use ultra-supercritical technology designed to improve power-generation efficiency. The project is expected to create up to 20,000 jobs during construction and around 5,000 jobs once operational. According to the company, the plant will begin operations in phases from December 2030. It is part of the Adani Group’s wider ₹63,000-crore investment in Assam’s power sector, which also includes two proposed pumped-storage projects with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW. The project is expected to strengthen electricity supplies for households, businesses and industries while creating opportunities for local contractors, suppliers and other businesses. It also marks a significant investment in Assam’s energy infrastructure and broader industrial development.
