Former Justice R. C. Chavan Resigns From Maharashtra UCC Panel

Former Bombay High Court judge Justice R. C. Chavan resigned from the Maharashtra government’s committee tasked with drafting a framework for implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state on September 19, 2026. He cited concerns over the committee’s functioning, including the use of a “yes-or-no” questionnaire to gather public feedback on complex social and family-related issues. He also questioned whether members’ suggestions were adequately considered and raised concerns about the participation of an official who was not a committee member at the time. The seven-member panel, headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Desai, was formed to prepare recommendations for the proposed code.
