India has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C as public health threats by 2030, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. At the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava highlighted the country’s efforts to strengthen prevention, early diagnosis and access to treatment.
Under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme, launched in 2018, more than 225 million people have been screened, and over 6.5 lakh patients have received free treatment. The programme focuses on expanding testing and treatment services, preventing mother-to-child transmission of Hepatitis B, and improving public awareness to reduce the spread of these infections.
