New Zealand Moves To Ban Social Media For Under-16s

New Zealand’s government, led by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, introduced the Online Safety Bill on August 24, 2026, proposing a ban on social media for under-16s. The move aims to protect children from harmful content, addictive technology and online risks. Social media platforms would be required to verify users’ ages and could face penalties of up to 10% of their global revenue for failing to comply.
