Global automaker Stellantis has acquired full ownership of its vehicle manufacturing plant in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, after buying the remaining stake held by Hindustan Motor Finance Corporation Ltd, a CK Birla Group company. The deal, announced on September 21, 2026, gives Stellantis complete control of Stellantis Automobiles India Private Limited and its manufacturing operations.
The plant manufactures Citroën models, including the C3, ë-C3, C3 Aircross and Basalt, and supplies vehicles to export markets across four continents. The facility has achieved more than 95% localisation, meaning most of its vehicle components and production inputs are sourced within India.
Stellantis plans to increase annual production at the facility from around 16,000 vehicles in 2026 to more than 43,000 by 2028. The company also expects its direct workforce to more than double from 610 employees, potentially creating additional jobs across its supplier and logistics networks.
The acquisition was funded through foreign direct investment and is expected to simplify decision-making, improve operational flexibility and strengthen India’s role in Stellantis’ global manufacturing and export strategy.
