UN Declares November 27 As World Day To End Child Marriage

September 5, 2026 • International
The United Nations General Assembly has designated November 27 every year as the “International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.” The decision was taken on 4 September 2026, when the 193-member UN General Assembly adopted the resolution by consensus. The resolution was led by Sierra Leone, with India among the co-sponsors. The new international observance aims to create a global platform for awareness, accountability and coordinated action against child, early and forced marriage. It calls for stronger efforts by governments, civil society, communities, schools, law-enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to protect children and ensure their rights to education, health, safety and a childhood free from forced marriage.
