The United States has announced a ban on certain Canadian dairy products and alcoholic beverages, adding to the growing trade tensions between the two countries. The new restrictions are scheduled to take effect on September 29, 2026.
The measures cover selected Canadian dairy products, including certain whey products, as well as several types of Canadian beer, wine and spirits. Not every Canadian dairy or alcohol product is covered by the ban; some products remain subject to separate 50% tariffs, while certain items are excluded from the new restrictions.
The US government says the action is linked to what it describes as unfair treatment of American dairy and alcoholic beverages in the Canadian market. The restrictions were imposed under Section 338 of the US Tariff Act of 1930.
The decision follows Canada's introduction of retaliatory tariffs on about US$20 billion worth of American goods on September 8. The latest measures therefore mark another step in the ongoing US-Canada trade dispute.
