The Ministry of Coal has launched India’s first sector-specific CSR framework for coal companies, aimed at making corporate social responsibility initiatives more structured, transparent, and focused on measurable outcomes. The framework was launched on 8 September 2026 in New Delhi by Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy. Prepared by the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), the framework will guide coal companies in planning CSR programmes based on the actual needs of communities living in and around mining areas. It focuses on ensuring that CSR spending leads to visible and meaningful benefits on the ground. The framework covers areas such as healthcare, education, livelihood development, community welfare and other local development needs. It also stresses better planning, transparency, accountability, monitoring and assessment of the impact of CSR projects. The launch also highlighted Coal India’s existing CSR initiatives, including Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana, under which more than 1,050 bone marrow transplants have been completed, and Nanha Sa Dil, through which more than 1,500 corrective heart surgeries have been carried out for children.
