India’s Suchika Tariyal created history by winning a bronze medal in women’s traditional 60 kg Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, securing the country’s first-ever Asian Games medal in the sport. The 36-year-old earned her place in the semifinals after defeating Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2–0 in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinal, Tariyal faced Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo in a closely contested bout that went into an extra round. The match was eventually declared a draw, and Teo advanced to the final after being found lighter during the morning weigh-in. Under the competition rules, both losing semifinalists received bronze medals, ensuring Tariyal a place on the podium.
A seasoned combat sports athlete from Haryana, Tariyal has previously represented India in judo at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and in kurash at the 2023 Asian Games. Her historic achievement marked an important milestone for Indian MMA, which made its Asian Games debut at the 2026 edition.
